Being the capital city of the wife of Columbia, there are very strict laws regarding auto insurance in this state. It is important to know the facts and what is required of you. Driving and driving of course are 2 different things. If you are a resident of this state, you must show proof of insurance and be insured at all times.

Washington D.C. is a no-fault state which means that even if you are at fault in the accident, your Personal Injury Protection or PIP as it is commonly known will help you as well and other passengers in the vehicle who will cover any medical or funeral expenses, or loss of income. This will relieve other drivers of greater responsibility for the accident you cause, but you will still be covered.

Minimum Liability Car Insurance Coverage in the State of D.C. is:

  • $25,000 for injury or death of one victim
  • $50,000 for injuring more than one victim
  • $10,000 for Property Damage to any home, garage, business, telephone pole, or physical object.
25/50/5 of Uninsured or Under insured Driver Coverage. This means if you are involved in an accident and the other driver is uninsured or insufficient, you will be covered $25,000 for injury to one victim, $50,000 per accidental damage to more than one victim, and $5,000 for Property Damage. This is a legal and regulatory requirement of D.C. about car insurance and should be included in your policy.

If you are pulled over for any reason, you must present proof of the above minimum liability insurance. Failure to do so will result in penalties and fines. If you fail to pay fines and obtain appropriate coverage, your license may be suspended or revoked. It is important to follow the law and be a law-abiding citizen.

Insurance providers in these states will also offer additional auto insurance that is optional for you to purchase. Collision Coverage, Comprehensive Coverage, or Med Pay are all add-ons. You need to determine the value of your car and all your assets in the event of an accident. A few accidents can take all of your life savings and put you in a financial hole for the rest of your life. Talk to your insurance agent and make sure you get the right coverage for you.

Life can be very unpredictable. Many things can happen, and we are at risk every time we are on the road. Getting the proper coverage can save you a lot of money and hassle in the event of an accident.
